Choose by surroundings, not by object
Which removal tool wins depends on what is around the object:
- Spot Healing Brush — small blemish on even background. One click.
- Healing Brush — same, but you pick the source with Alt. Use when Spot Healing pulls in the wrong texture.
- Clone Stamp — anywhere with structure that must line up: brickwork, horizons, straight edges. It copies exactly, with no blending, so it is the only reliable choice near a hard line.
- Content-Aware Fill / Generative Fill — large objects in complex or organic backgrounds.
Why healing fails at edges
The healing tools blend the sampled texture with the surrounding tone. Near a strong edge — a horizon, a wall corner — that blend smears dark into light and leaves a grey bruise. This is the most common frustration with healing tools, and the fix is always the same: use the Clone Stamp within a selection that stops at the edge.
Content-Aware Fill
Make a loose selection around the object, Shift-Backspace → Content-Aware, or Edit → Content-Aware Fill for the full workspace. In the workspace, paint out of the green sampling area anything you do not want copied in. Output to a new layer so the result is maskable.
Generative Fill
Select the object, click Generative Fill, and leave the prompt empty to remove rather than replace. An empty prompt tells Photoshop to reconstruct the background; typing a description makes it invent something new. Each run produces variations you can cycle through, and results land on their own layer.
It struggles with repeating geometric patterns and with matching film grain, so check tiling and noise on the result. AI-generated regions are also often slightly softer than the surrounding photo — a little noise on the generated layer usually reconciles it.
Always work on a separate layer
Set the healing and clone tools to sample All Layers and work on an empty layer above the photo. Your repairs stay independent, you can mask or fade them, and the original is intact. This matters more than any individual tool choice — see non-destructive editing.
