Photoshop Brushes And How To Download The Best Ones For Free

If you wish to use Adobe Photoshop brushes then you must have a tool which uses brushes already active. If your current tool does not support brushes then you’ll see the brushes panel as being grayed and not clickable. The fastest way to quickly active a brush tool is to press “B” on your keyboard. For the novice, Photoshop’s brushes panel seems to have a very confusing amount of options at first glance! You do have to put in some time learning where things are and what they’ll do for you. The real truth (or good news even) is that unless you are into making dramatic art or recreating paintings you won’t need to go near or understand 80% of what’s on there. So let’s get down to finding what will be genuinely useful for you.

There’s quite a demand for free photoshop brushes free downloads and you will find a lot available for you by doing a simple Google search however if you really want to get some professional results (that not a million other people are also using!) then it’s best to invest in genuine set. You’ll normally download photoshop brushes as zip file and from there it’s quite easy to import and use. Just make sure that when you set up your brushes that you are saving the settings with them as outlined in the content below.

I’ve found that one of the best places to look is on deviantart photoshop brushes – you can search through the listings and find some really great stuff there, in fact, it’s a little bit addictive and I’ve gotten a lot of my photoshop brushes from there. It’s also very popular to look for themes such as Christmas photoshop brushes – they are a massive time saver when it comes to designing cards or other decorative illustrations.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular categories -

  • Abstract Photoshop brushes

The Brush Panel Options

You’ll find the options for the brushes panel on the left just like the Layer and Style dialog box. You can tick the check boxes for the features you want to be activated. If however you want to open the settings for any particular feature in the panel you need to click on its name. Here’s a quick tip: If you open the panel and only see some of the sample brush tips then you need to switch to expanded view.

So looking at the brushes menu panel you probably already recognize many of the commands as they are scattered quite frequently around Photo-shop’s workspace. These include how you want the panel to be displayed and buttons for saving or loading different brushes plus a reset button. Of most interest will be the list of available Photoshop brush sets at the bottom. It’s honestly good practice to use the little padlock icons to protect the various settings and preferences you set for you brushes and gradients as you switch between them and load up other brush tip presets. Otherwise as soon as you switch over the brush tip will automatically revert to its default preset setting shipped with the software.

So for example, if we were to lock the Shape Dynamics with a brush tip then those settings would be kept even if we changed to use a totally different brush tip.

The most important panes and options:

Taking the brush presets you’ll see that it allows you to select your brush tip shape from the selection of tips available. From here you’re also able to make the brush tip a different size. There’s also no need to turn on or off the brush presets, basically you simply choose the brush tip you want to use and then a size.

Next we come to the options for your Photoshop brush tip shapes. This is where you’re able to modify, edit or customize your brush tip and this is actually the most useful part of the brushes panel. Inside the pane you’ll be able to select the tip, choose a size plus many other factors such as the angle of the tip, the roundness and its spacing.

Now let’s look at Shape Dynamics. As you use Photoshop brushes and brush styles you can add a variation to the pattern or line as you draw. This is where the settings for the Shape Dynamics come in as it allows the user to adjust what’s known as the “jitter”. We have size jitter, angle jitter, roundness jitter and so forth. You can also set them to fade away or controlled using what’s known as a stylus from a Wacom tablet. This feature is also a very useful way to add some random design elements into your painting work.

Next in line is going to be the Texture pane. This will assign Photoshop patterns to the tips of your brushes and Photoshop lets you choose from presets. In order to get the most out of texture you need to have the brush tip spacing set to a minimum of 50%.

A dual brush will combine or overlay two separate brush tips according to your settings in the blend mode. This is one of the most powerful features of Photoshop brushes. You could, for example, combine a rounded brush tip with a scatter one which would create a nice break in the line as you painted.

In the Color Dynamics pane you can change the color as you draw which is especially useful when it comes to painting images and picture scenes. For artists creating a landscape image for example then it’s very useful to use jitter to add some random variations as would be the case in natures lines but to make graphics even more real you can also add some slight (or extreme) variations in color as you draw. Using the feature you could select a blue as the front color while the background was an off-white and then introduce a little jitter to the saturation and hue. The more of a genius you are, the better you’ll make it work!

How To Make Your Own Photoshop Brush Tips And Custom Shapes

The first thing to know is that any piece of artwork can be used as a brush tip. All you need to do is go to edit – define brush preset, choose a name for it and click OK. This will add the brush to your custom list and from now on it’ll be available for you to use in any of your projects just like the presets. It’s also good at this point to open up the brushes panel and set all of the other parameters to get exactly what you want before a final save is done. This final save involves going to the Photoshop brushes menu – new brush preset – and saving once more. Now you’ll have everything set up and ready at a single click.

The maximum size allowed for a brush is 2,500 pixels. If you go larger than this then you’ll find it gets grayed out by Photoshop and you’ll need to reduce its pixel size. Brushes are always in grayscale so even if you found, set up and saved your custom brush within a particular color, the brush itself is always saved as a grayscale.
